Winterize Your Roof

Here in the Memphis area, we are about to have our first blast of winter air. Is your home ready for it?  Sure, you may have your fire wood stacked up, your hot cocoa stocked up and your blankets ready but what about your roof? There are a few things you need to check to make sure your roof is ready to face the winter.
First of all, check your shingles.  If you see that you are missing any, replace them.  Use a water hose and spray your roof on a clear day and see if you notice any leaks inside. Check around your chimney and exhaust stacks and make sure they are properly sealed.
Next, check your gutters to make sure they are cleaned and working properly.  If you have a lot of leaves in them, you should consider a leaf guard. This inexpensive accessory can save you time and money in the long run.
Check your downspouts to make sure they are not clogged.  You can do this by spraying water down.  The water from your gutters and downspouts should be hitting the ground six to eight feet away from the house. If water is coming out too close to the house, install extensions
Make sure your interior is properly insulated. This keeps heat in and keeps cold out.  Escaping heat can warm the rooftop enough to cause snow to melt which will freeze in your gutters and downspouts on a cold day causing ice dams to form.
